When Microsoft provides the update to your PC, it automatically installs itself. But Microsoft doesn’t offer new Windows updates to all PCs at once. Instead, Microsoft rolls them out slowly over time, after both Microsoft and the various PC manufacturers check to see if they cause problems with different hardware configurations. If your PC doesn’t get the update, Microsoft isn’t entirely confident it will work on your hardware just yet. That was put into doubt following July 2022 rumours from Windows Central, that suggested it’d be replaced with more frequent “Moment” updates throughout the year. Plenty of new functionality was added in September’s 22H2 update, before File Explorer tabs finally arrived in a subsequent October 2022 update. Another range of new features were then released in February 2023. In the meantime you can enjoy that apparently someone found reference to the name Windows 11 in one of Microsoft’s code bases in the Github service it runs, according to Bleeping Computer. However, you can override this and choose to install the update anyway. After all, you can always downgrade back to your current version of Windows 10 if you have any problems, assuming you choose to do so within ten days after upgrading. There’s some risk here, but you are still installing a stable operating system update.

All updates — from security updates and Windows Defender definition updates to optional updates and driver updates — will be installed automatically. After the computer restarts, you’ll need to manually download and install two updates for Windows 7. You’ll need to check whether you’re running a 32-bit version of Windows or a 64-bit version and download the appropriate updates for your PC.

How to Change Windows Update Settings in Windows 8, 7, & Vista

Under Pause updates, use the dropdown box to choose a date up to 35 days from today. Updates won’t install until this day hits—and at that time, you’ll have to install all available updates before you can pause again. If you need to block your computer from installing all updates for a time, you can use the option to pause updates for up to a few weeks. This is a built-in option available in all Windows 10 editions, as long as you’re on a modern version. On that page, you can also click Advanced options and enable the option to Download updates over metered connections, which will effectively disable the metered method of limiting updates.
